Detailed Description
Caly 3 - ZDP-189 Blade - Carbon Fiber Scales
Yes. Before the Caly3 (and abbreviation of the name) there was a Calypso2 and Calypso1. No they didn't
fade away or die. They were improved upon, becoming more functional and useful with each rendition.
Like comparing the first Corvette to today's Corvette, the latest Caly3 is an offshoot and tangible
testament to the design's durability and popularity. People continue buying the folder because Spyderco
held true its original premise: A great folding knife should function and feel like a natural extension of
the hand. The Caly3 CFP, with its high-end laminated ZDP-189 blade steel with buffed carbon fiber handle
is yet another variation of the knife that converted legions of knife buyers to the hard-use benefits of
flat-ground leaf-shaped blades. ZDP-189 blade steel contains 3% carbon, making it harder, higher on the
Rockwell scale and in turn extending the amount of time it stays sharp. The Caly3 CFP comes with a
PlainEdged that is ground flat for precise cutting. The handle's shape settles the index finger on
the underside and thumb naturally above on the jimped (slip resistant) spine so the knife feels like part
of the hand with controlled grip and no forward or backward slide while cutting. Ambidextrous
deep-pocket-carry tip-up wire clip. Mid-positioned back lock.

A Quintessential Knife with Few Flaws

When you first see this knife the complexity of it suggests it is a larger knife than the UKPK it exactly matches in size. But it is so well put together that the slippery scales and fine scratches around the pivot area lose their significance. Keep your Caly 3 lubed and mail it to Spyderco for resharpening every 6 to 12 months and this knife will serve well as an EDC for many years to come.

Carry it every day

I have become a Spyderco convert! I have an Endura 4 with G10 handles that pretty much sits in the safe for now. Spyderco: Excellent quality + reasonable price = great value.
But, I carry the Caly 3 CF every day. I really like the CF handles. They are smooth, yet they offer a very nice grip.
I also like the clip position, as it allows the knife to ride lower in the pocket with minimal exposure.
This is my first "carry" knife, and I'm surprised at how often I use it.
I've checked around and the Cutlery Shoppe's prices are usually the best. Service is great, too.

The Caly 3 was already one of my favorite knives and now they come out with this! The combination of carbon fiber and ZDP steel together gives knives like this and the Stretch outstanding strength combined with world class edge holding performance. Yes, they are more expensive, but when you see the quality that Spyderco puts into this knife you will appreciate the value!
